BLACK CROWES AMORICA TOUR And Documentary

Today we are looking back at the BLACK CROWES THE AMORICA TOUR AND A Documentry about the Black Crowes. With videos such as the story behind the Amorica Tour and /a few of the best footage of the Black Crowes.

I have at times been a late bloomer on bands. The Black Crowes were not one. They appeared on my radar the same as the Rest of the world. I saw the growth from “Shake Your Money Maker” to “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion”. I owned and wore out a few copies of these Masterworks. I however didn’t get the opportunity to go to a Crowes show until “Amorica” was released. That entire experience made up for the lag time. It had less to do with the show than what was happening about an hour and a half before they were to take the stage. With the Amorica Tour on March 14, 1995, in Cleveland, Ohio.

The ticket purchase was a Birthday present for me. It quickly became much more than anticipated. The opening act was “The Dirty Dozen Brass Band” on Paper. The REAL Opening act was The Crowes themselves in a Reality sense. You often want to interact and witness behind-the-scenes things with your music heroes. This was weirdly perfect timing.

Our little group was walking up the sidewalk and right about the time we reached the Tour Bus on the left of us and the backstage door on our right I stopped dead in my tracks. I was asked what was happening and had to say “SHHHHH!” In a Muffled manner, I knew what I was hearing. There was nothing quite like a Band fight between Chris and Rich Robinson. Screaming, Obscenities straight from the script of “The Exorcist”, Chairs being thrown, Bottles Breaking, and this went on for a couple of minutes. Then the Door was KICKED open and Bassist Johnny Colt stormed out. Another afternoon for him watching his band explode. He walked across in front of me about 4 ft away and I just nodded at him and he shook his head in weariness and we locked eyes.

This was not the time for an autograph, his eyes told the story. It was an appreciation for not bothering him, with a pinch of “I swear if you speak to me right now I might have to kill you.” Those things don’t need to be spoken, you just know. I’d rather it have gone that way than it to have been the boring “Hey I got Johnny Colt’s autograph like millions have done before”. We had a Human Being Moment. He got on the bus. I looked over to my right and see the door is still open, so a few steps forward and I can see more chairs and bottles flying, and then Chris Robinson jumped from the food table like a Cocaine Superman to tackle to the ground brother Rich. A Huge Security Guard reaches out and slams the door. We 4 all in astonishment wondered if there would be a show or a murder. On Reflection, I knew Johnny asked himself that same question…every night.

Two Hours Later they turned in one of the best concerts you could ask for. I’ve been able to find tons of audio and video from shows the same week in other cities, some just a matter of days before or after Yet never that show. So I’ve come to this to give you a perspective on the period of the band’s life as their downward spiral began. Toronto 48 hours later. Secondly a better recording just 3 months later.

The Black Crowes – 16 March 1995 – Maple Leaf Gardens – Toronto, Ontario – Full SHow

The Black Crowes – Glastonbury Festival 1995-06-23

The dispute in Cleveland continued until the next week when they performed a series of concerts at the Beacon Theater in New York. On the opening night, the band was on the verge of canceling the entire 1995 tour and disbanding. Fortunately, their management persuaded them to stay united. Hence, the show I attended was nearly the only show I experienced.

Album and AMORICA TOUR

It’s an album that had to grow on many of us. Southern Harmony was undoubtedly impossible to follow and in time you realized that songs like “Wiser Time” “Gone” “A Conspiracy” worked well.
They were living in their own World they did state publicly that was “AMORICA”, emphasis or the MORE. It’s astounding they survived those 2 years and the years of Darkness that followed.
In Hindsight it is a solid album and they did find their feet again.

Chris and Rich Robinson are much like Phil and Don Everly. This was not Wake up Little Suzy, this was two brothers who carried a love Hate trip. This is not unusual in the least with the exception of the fights that were in the press, in front of cameras, and the fans. Without them, you had no Crowes. I’ve followed their separate careers and attended a “Chris Robinson Brotherhood” show and was mighty impressed. Chris just has the Voice only he can deliver, a Soulful Monster.

He has always had the Mouth as well, quick with a joke or Hilariously sarcasm as we call them “Chrisism”. Rich is from the school of Keith Richards. Solid, yet being a Grateful Dead Head he navigated the sounds in directions that were more often fabulous and kept the band from stagnating. He also came into his own voice as a solo artist and singer. The entire band lineup was picked by Jimmy Page to do a tour founded on the music of Zeppelin so that should in itself be enough to tell you their talents. They are currently reformed as The Black Crowes, with the Brothers being the only two from the original band.

Drummer Steve Gorman is one of my favorite drummers. He is never Flash. He has an understated groove that is always Just right. I firmly believe he can do more than we fans have ever seen, but he has a level head and serves the song. His Groove is hypnotic. I began to learn to play drums myself in 2007 and in my writing and recordings I subconsciously founded my own thoughts based solely on Steve. He was also much Like The Rolling Stones Bill Wyman the archivist and memory of the band and here we have been given the unflinching truths in his memoir “Hard to Handle”.
Steve Gorman details The Black Crowes Breakup, talks about how he taught Jimmy Page how to nap

Marc Ford has always been one of my favorite players. I was fortunate enough to see him in 1995 and then upfront in 2006 during his short 2nd membership in the band. He had redeemed his life as he has often spoken with brutal honesty about his addiction and road to sobriety. He was let go as he did reach the point of not knowing where he was and might well be playing in a different key and on occasion playing entirely different sand than the band. They simply began to turn him off the soundboard. The 2006 shows were him back on A Game, but he departed to protect his hard-won sobriety. He was his brilliant self on this show. Lightning does strike twice in the right circumstances.

The Black Crowes – Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, Columbus, OH 2006-08-01 (full show, audio only)

Johnny Colt turned in his walking papers in 1997 and pursued all manner of musical projects. I recently heard that he was playing Bass with Lynyrd Skynyrd. You can keep up with all things Colt here on Colt.

Ed Harsch was The Glue. He came to the Crowes from an already successful band “The Detroit Cobras” was Keyboard Player Chuck Levell had contributed to the band’s first album but was busy with other projects, the largest of which was being in The Rolling Stones. Ed was just a Brilliant part of the band and was happy to be there. I don’t recall ever seeing him in my many shows without a smile on his face. Sadly the world lost “Old Weird Ed” in 2016.

The Magpie Salute – Gramercy Theatre – Eddie Harsch Tribute Live

After the initial reaction and reception of “Amorica”, it is now looking back over the shoulder a Great work against all odds against it. It was much Like the Rolling Stones “Exile on Main Street” in that over time it progressed from “What the Hell is this?” to “Alright I get it.” Change is never-ending and they were a band that was not afraid to experiment, even if it fell flat on its face. That is something to be respected. They Never once played it safe.

The Black Crowes had many many lineup changes over 30 years and some stellar players, from Audley Freed to Luther Dickinson and Jackie Green paid their dues on the guitar,. Sven Pipien and Greg Rzab are on Bass duty. From 1995’s “Amorica” there was the lost period, They continued making records but it only came back into focus with 2001’s “Lions”. Some argue about that but in my opinion, it was the Redemption album.

I would be remiss If I didn’t mention Original Guitarist Jeff Cease He worked with the band throughout the first album and tour before being fired partly according to the band his lack of musical progress and the Pot calling the Kettle black “substance abuse.”

I had some discussions for about a year in 2010 with Jeff. At first, he was not having it and remained silent. Finally one day I wrote to him again and said “I’m not here to talk about the Crowes, I’m here to talk about YOU.” That broke the ice and we discussed bands he had been in and I tried for a number of months to encourage him in some solo efforts. He expressed that he had become the go-to Guitarist for the tours of the “American Idol” winners and was content doing that. He did also express he found his niche as at that time in Nashville they were fewer Les Paul players and it made him stand out a bit. In hindsight as the acts coming out of the Nashville Industry are somewhat reaping the benefit of the Les Paul Standard as a tool in the new growth of country-related music. He was a great conversationalist and a pleasure to speak with. As happens in life the conversations just got put by the wayside

As it seems the core of the Black Crowes may remain forever by the wayside as well music fans were well gifted with mostly great music. They had their moments of confusion and a few records that left many scratching their heads. No matter how weird and Dark things got there was always one or two shining moments on the record, but on the stage was where they lived. One the road was where they thrived, and in History was where they Rocked. Let the Feathers Fly where they may…. It was a Hell of a mayhem band. Thanks for the memories and the Jams.

The Guitar As a Songwriting Tool

Masters of guitar based songwriting.

We have been talking guitar Virtuosos for quite some time and it will continue. However, I want to address the Guitar in its own equal use, and its true value from the most important guitar application, songwriting.

Anyone can learn to play the guitar, but not everyone can become a great songwriter. It’s one of the most difficult, yet enjoyable and rewarding efforts. Everyone could be a songwriter with the proper effort and discipline but it often falls by the wayside. 98% of True writers employ either a guitar or a piano..and the craftsmanship of the song is first, without a song, you have zero.

There’s a more profound use in learning Rhythm, Chord arrangement, and the mastery of simple accompaniment to the lyric. You don’t have to be The greatest lead player, you need all the elements to make the silence your canvas and paint that picture through a pen, paper, your voice, and that guitar. Let’s look and listen to a few you should know.

Katie Martin

Alabama Born and now Georgia resident Katie Martin is the definition of The Great American Songwriter. She has a not-so-secret weapon that she is also one of my favorite guitarists ever.  In many settings, she can be one of the most unique and jaw-dropping lead players.

No fooling she is a Badass. However, we are talking about “The Song”. I met her in 2018 at Little Creek Vineyard in North Carolina as we both were performing there. We had a brief chat about music and related subjects and she handed me a cd of one of her solo albums..” Hope”

“When the Water Flows” – Katie Martin (Unplugged w/ Tonewood Amp)

Upon returning to Ohio I started digging for more material online and was amazed at the sheer volume of work she has done, and that there was nothing that made me say “That’s good but…” Because it was all so very good. One of the main points in relating to a song is does it move you? In her case They all do.

Katie works as hard as anyone in the world, on the road in the studio and at home to capture such amazing songs from the thing we call life.” When the Water Flows” is One of the best songs ever written by anyone, period. This particular performance moves me to the edge of tears every time and that is often.

“Purpose” by Katie Martin

She is not one you can put in a box and Label. It’s just Katie Martin Music.

Fire in Our Hearts’ – Katie Martin + Larry Mitchell

She is not only one of the finest writers, vocalists, and Guitarists, but she is also an artist in every sense of the word. Put a pen or brush in her hand and she will create something special. Hand her a camera and she will bring beauty from it.

World Class, Humble and fascinating. I urge you to subscribe to her youtube and visit and purchase her work. She puts Soul in everything she does.

Mike Webb

The advantage I’ve had in being a session musician is the people I’ve met. Some you put your time in and never see again, Some you leave having made a long-time friend.

I met Mike Webb in Chillicothe, Ohio’s Mike Webb when recording the Black Cat Mass album at Chilliworks Recording studio.

Mike was working on one of his many projects around the same time and one day I was called to do some work as a Lead player. I just wanted to know the daytime and style of music.

The reply was Honky Tonking and I thought well cool, I spent 15 years doing that so I dusted off a Telecaster and showed up to record “Where The Hell’s my Truck”. On Mike’s “Another Day” Project. A true friend was made that day.

BLAME IT ON EVE

By Mike’s recollection, he started writing about 50 years ago but got serious
About 30 years. In the years I’ve been in touch with him he has been the most prolific of writers. He allows no boundaries, It might be Country, Bluegrass, Rock N Roll, or any combination of those.

He Has lived the things he writes about and there are no 6 people in a room songwriting team. Give him his Guitar and a place to sit and think and he’s going to come up with something to make you know what’s on his mind, and often what’s climbing out of his soul.

No one Trick Pony here. His music can be tongue in cheek with his humor, or he can dig into the deepest well and make you think about the Human condition.

He’s also just a good man. He has often taken me to Dr.’s appointments. One particular evening he drove me down to the studio so he could sit silently in the corner while I was doing an interview with some other musicians.

Chilliworks owner Chad Uhrig and I had started the “Music on the Mountain” program but we just hit  4 episodes when I had to pause as Covid was escalating. I had been wanting Mike as a guest and Luckily we got there as it was the last one. I foresee it coming back when the time is right.

Michael Boyle

I met Mike at the age of 15 when he allowed me to play a break during his sets at Taylor’s Stagg Bar in Chillicothe. I had no business being there and a high school friend was with me to take the drum Throne and we played LOUD! Surprisingly instead of being tossed out, we were told to play more. Mike has been my friend ever since and he is the reason I am a songwriter. We had countless years of fun playing together in planned shows and impromptu performances.

One night he and I were talking about the fact I had written maybe three songs and I didn’t even know if I could call them songs. He explained to me that inspiration can come from anywhere, a line in the newspaper, or on the bathroom wall. You Just have to work at it.

michael boyle dont have to say goodbye

It took another 5 years but I began to take his advice and now I’ve written over 100 songs. In truth, I owe the second half of my music career to him. He always had my back, and in more ways than one. He has been an incredible friend. He is also the best-kept secret, a Gem of a writer.

Little Miss Moonshine (2021)

Over the years He’s written staggeringly emotional songs, and each embodies his incredible versatility in subject matter and musical style. One evening he played me a song called “Bad Boy” and said he wasn’t sure he liked it. It spoke to me as it related to some wayward family members and the region was very specific. I asked if I could adapt it into my show and he once again was fully supportive.

I filled a lot of time Over the years playing a few more of his works and have always said he was our Bob Dylan.

I plan to reconnect and expand further on Mike in a separate article soon but for now, know this Gentleman I owe a debt of gratitude to. He NEVER ceases to amaze me.

Hit up his youtube and see where he goes next as he’s gonna treat you so many ways you will have to like one of them, or in most cases ALL of them. Bless ya Brother.

Stoner Rock Masters-SLEEP

Heavy, Crushing, Lyrically conceptual, and Running neck and neck with Motorhead for The Loudest band ever, SLEEP is not a band they are an Entity they are the true Stoner Rock Masters.

I saw the stoner rock masters inadvertently in Columbus, Ohio’s “Staches “on campus. A tiny bar when they were on tour in 1994 with Nik Turner’s Hawkwind. We arrived about 5 mins before their set and had no idea the Massive onslaught that was about to happen 7 feet away from where we stood.

The projection behind the band started, Nasa footage of space travel, and then Guitarist Matt Pike let loose the most brutal Guitar Drone, and Drummer Chris Hakius built the tension for Bassist/Vocalist Al Cisneros to Take us to true liftoff. “Look into the Rays of the New Stoner Sun Rising….” announced this band was not lacking a lyrical foundation.

It was SABBATH on Steroids, Psychedelic but not Pink Floyd. I truly had nothing to compare them to. Sleep was a Tornado that stayed in place for over 30 mins. They were Playing material from their second record “Holy Mountain” and bits and pieces of what eventually became the Legendary Opus “Dopesmoker”.

I foolishly leaned in to speak to Al…extending my arm for a handshake and said “You are incredible and it’s great to have something to get excited about again”. It was then I realized that he wasn’t speaking back and I was put on notice by his eyes and the drool coming from the side of his mouth that he was Tripping his face off and I probably looked like any number of characters in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. There’s no discussion in that situation.

Stoner Rock Masters Sleep – Dragonaut [Official Video]

Green Meta amps, Rickenbacker Bass, and a Les Paul were the sound of the Monster in the room and Pike was a flurry of Dreadlocks. The Drummer at times would wait until the very last millisecond to hit the timing of a cymbal is was like watching Bruce Lee in Slow Motion. Mesmerizing.

Sleep – Carrboro 23/01/1994

After the show was done I lost track of the band as the internet was not an option at that time for me to know anything. The Band Toured Europe and elsewhere and at some point the London record label signed them and quickly were confused by the “DopeSmoker” Project. They refused to release it, and it lay in the Vaults while lawsuits and arguments ensued. It was edited and released at some point later as “Jerusalem” an Official Bootleg by the Band, Later that year was released properly by The Music Cartel in the US and Rise Above Records in Europe.

The struggles of all this caused the band to break up and they became two other successful acts. Matt Pike went on to form “High on Fire” and Al and Chris formed the duo “Om”

In 2003 “Dopesmoker” got its Due credit being released in its original form by Tee Pee
Records
.

Sleep How They Created Dopesmoker

The single projects “The Clarity” came prior and “Leagues Beneath” shortly thereafter. I was chomping at the bit for the announcement of Tour dates in 2018. Ecstatically we got them and During the time I was working with Maya Calvert , My Partner in Crime Matt Moon, Maya and I were all three able to see this Gift of a tour. I Had Tickets for Detroit, Cleveland, and Columbus but due to scheduling we ate the Detroit show but caught them at The Agora and The Columbus Athenaeum.

SLEEP Stoner Rock Masters, Cleveland Agora April 1st, 2018 Dopesmoker / Holy Mountain

SLEEP fans are a bit like RUSH and Grateful Dead fans. You can run into the same people and talk about the show the night before In any given city. Those 2 nights were also a testimony that the Merch is highly sought after. I looked both nights and realized the lines were so long to pick up a shirt or a poster meant you had a choice. You could A. See the show or B. Stand in line the whole show and possibly find out they sold out of every item you were there to purchase. We chose the Show live at the Agora, and rightly so.

SLEEP has a very successful relationship with Third man Records and some very cool releases hit now and then. Who knows what the future holds, and I think that’s the intrigue that keeps us die-hard fans on the edge of our seats. If you haven’t seen them Live I can’t recommend it enough . Fair Warning to the new, your ears will ring for a day or two after but if you love Heavy Doom and Trance like music, you will also be grinning for days and talking about it for years.

Alice Cooper Guitar Players Slingers and Hired Guns

Did Alice Cooper Have Many Guitar Players in His Career?

Oh man, Alice Cooper has had so many guitar players over the years! I mean, the guy’s been around since the 60s, so it’s not surprising. But seriously, it’s like every time I turn around, he’s got a new guitarist in his band.

Honestly though, I think it’s kind of cool that he’s given so many musicians the opportunity to play with him like we at Guitardoor also try to feature guitar players :). Plus, it keeps Musical things fresh and interesting.

If you’re looking to start a band or something, my advice would be to always be open to collaborating with different people. You never know what kind of magic you might create together.

The keys to the kingdom are the musicians you surround yourself with. Alice Cooper has always been the showman and Icon in the front yet had the wisdom to showcase his band members especially the Alice Cooper guitar players over the years. There have been many Guitarists involved for substantial amounts of time and all have contributed their own Genius sounds.

Who Are Alice Coopers Current Guitar Players?

Alice Cooper’s current guitar players are Nita Strauss and Ryan Roxie.Nita Strauss and Ryan Roxie are both accomplished guitarists who have played for Alice Cooper. Nita joined the band in 2014, becoming the first female guitarist to play for Alice Cooper. She has been praised for her technical ability and stage presence. Ryan, on the other hand, has been a member of the band on and off since the 1990s. He is known for his energetic performances and catchy riffs. Together, Nita and Ryan bring a unique blend of talent and experience to Alice Cooper’s live shows

Previous Alice Cooper Guitar players Glen Buxton and Michael Bruce are the reason we are studying this subject today. Had it not been for them there would not be the rest.

Alice Cooper – Public Animal No 9 (Live 1972)

The Original 2 armed with SG’s were Raw and Rough-in the Best of ways. Buxton and Bruce had the ability to take up a jam and add the explorations that kept the same songs fresh and exciting night after night. They were the foundation for everything thereafter and were everything Rock Guitar is supposed to be. So Many of us wish that band with Dennis Dunaway and Neil Smith could have gone on forever but by 1974 it became the epitome of “When one door Closes, Another Opens.”

Alice Cooper Guitarists from 1974-1979

Alice continued the Nightmare and the players involved are equally fascinating. Everyone is his own man.  Jim Gannon, Bob Kulick,  Davey Johnstone, Jefferson Kewley. Then you have the Double Trouble team of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. The two guitarists brought an incredible dynamic with Wagner’s visionary writing skills as more weaponry and well Steve Hunter is just always been a Force on nature.

John Nitzinger and Mike Pinera arrived and were part of the crew including more work with Mandel and Dick Wagner to create the music for “Flush the Fashion” “Special Forces” and others.

1989-2000 Guitarists for Cooper

Players Steph Burns, Pete Friesen, Vinnie Moore, Al Pitrelli, Joe Satriani, Paul Taylor, and even Steve Vai lent their talents to recordings and/ or stage work. This became the time when the industry would refer to musicians as “The A-List”. First calls for work. The bands to follow became the Long timers as they would eventually form a foundation that was as solid as the original Alice Cooper Group.

This period of time was when I started going to see Alice. It is the first time to witness the Talents of Ryan Roxie.

Reb Beach, Eric Dover, Mark Francis, Pete Friesen, Damon Johnson, and Phil X were active in many forms. Yet Roxie became a mainstay. Albums and tours for “Brutal Planet” and “Dragontown” were creating new Masterpieces in the studio and on the stage.

2003-present day

Jason Hook, Eric Bergeron, Damon Johnson, and Kerri Kelly were in the fun. Roxie was still on Board and Bassist  Chuck Garric entered the band that was gradually becoming the Beast to come later. Lady Badass Orianthi paid her dues on the road as well.

The Ultimate lineup that is the best I’ve seen since the Original is now Garric, Roxie, Tommy Henrickson, and Queen Nita Strauss. It Is a Barn Burner of a band. After Many an Alice show I ticked off on my Bucket List with Up Front Tickets during the 2018 “Paranormal” Tour at The Louisville Palace and you would be hard-pressed to find a tighter and more talented band ever.

The Coop has always given 110% for his audience and demands the best players to provide it as well. He’s encouraged those that have worked with him and had aspirations to go elsewhere and chase their dreams to do just that. The Original Villain of Rock is a thoughtful Gentleman offstage, but when the clock says go and “Alice “ has to take over he wants to Tear the place apart and knows how to pick the right guitar players to do just that!

The guitarists of Alice Cooper have brought their own individual artistry and influences to the band’s music, creating a diverse and dynamic sound. From the bluesy riffs of Glen Buxton to the classical influences of Steve Hunter, each guitarist has left an indelible mark on Alice Cooper’s discography.

Let us celebrate the unique contributions of these talented musicians who have helped shape the landscape of rock music.

URIAH HEEP “LEGENDS OF THE LONG RUN”

Uriah Heep, a British rock band formed in 1969, has become legendary in the music industry. Known for their unique blend of hard rock and progressive rock, the band has left a lasting impact on the genre. With a discography spanning over five decades, Uriah Heep has released numerous albums, including iconic hits such as “Easy Livin'” and “July Morning”. Their distinctive sound, characterized by soaring vocals, intricate guitar solos and elaborate keyboard arrangements, has captivated audiences around the world. Over the years, the band has undergone several lineup changes, but their commitment to creating powerful and emotive music has remained unwavering. Uriah Heep’s influence can be felt in the work of countless rock bands that have followed in their footsteps. With their enduring legacy and continued success, Uriah Heep truly deserves their status as legends of the long run.

50 years in the Spotlight and over 40 million albums sold is a testament to Uriah Heep who are counted alongside Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Deep Purple as the original Hard Rock Monsters.

Unfortunately, we lost Mr. Ken Hensley in 2020 but his music with URIAH HEEP and otherwise lives on. He was a special Human and very very kind to me. More on that as we go…

The Band was formed in London in 1969..under the name of Spice. Then the name was changed to that of the well-known character from Charles Dickens’s “David Copperfield”, Uriah Heep.

According to Dave Ling’s 2001 autobiography of the band, Wizards and Demons, The Uriah Heep Story, though the “Uriah Heep” moniker was chosen in December 1969, the band continued to play gigs as “Spice” until Ken Hensley joined in February 1970. Uriah Heep then decided to widen the sound. “We’d actually recorded half the first album when we decided that keyboards would be good for our sound.”

“ I was a big Vanilla Fudge fan, with their Hammond organ and searing guitar on top, and we had David Byron’s high vibrato vocals anyway so that’s how we decided to shape it,”Guitarist Mick  Box recalled. Gerry Bron brought in session player Colin Wood, followed by Ken Hensley, a former colleague of Bassist Paul Newton.

“I saw a lot of potential in the group to do something very different,” remembered Hensley David Garrick was now Heep’s second Drummer and The lineup would release Their 1970 debut album, …Very ‘Eavy …Very ‘Umble (released as Uriah Heep in the United States).

The albums “Salisbury” and “Take a look at Yourself” followed. The First three were Praised by some and cut to Ribbons by others but the combo of Box, Byron, and Hensley was about to unleash some music that is a must-have for anyone who has ears.

Lineup changes as with so many bands occurred but “Demon’s and Wizards” with Lee Kerslake and Gary Thain in the Mix, set a new bar in Rock music.

No. 20 in the UK and No. 23 in the US in June 1972., Demons and Wizards was THE album spawning the single’s “Wizard” and “Easy Livin’ “ and the World was opening up to The Heep.

November 1972, Uriah Heep’s fifth studio album “The Magician’s Birthday” saw its release, with “Sweet Lorraine” released as an American single and the title track (a multi-part fantasy epic featuring Hensley–Byron vocal duel and Box’s extensive guitar solo in the middle) being the album’s highlight.

“Uriah Heep used to have an image, now they have personality,” wrote Melody Maker in 1973. .Hensley too developed into a sophisticated instrumentalist and stage persona, whose writing and keyboard Mastery pushed the rest of the band to excellence.

Personally “The Magician’s Birthday” is my Favorite Heep album. It stands up next to anyone’s work to this day.

Mick Box is one of the most underrated guitarists ever. He Can deliver Magnificent pieces of Power on tracks Like “Sunrise”, intricate and soulful lines as those in “Blind Eye” and take on slides in songs like “Spider-Woman” which are much like the works of The Doors Legend Robbie Krieger. Following up with his very own color of slide-in “ Echoes in the Dark”.

Roger Dean’s Artwork is also stunning and becomes in some respects as vital as if he were Part of the Band itself. A Double Live Album followed. Shortly after the Album “Sweet Freedom” brought “Stealin’ “and success kept building

Success can often lead to excess and burnout over time. By 1974, the disappointment of the members in the result of the “Wonderworld” album, as well as substance abuse and general exhaustion, brought disaster. The situation reached a critical point during a tour in September when the bassist received a serious electric shock on stage in Dallas during a gig at Southern Methodist University’s Moody Coliseum on 15th September 1974. As a result, the rest of the US tour was canceled, and their UK dates were rescheduled for October.

Soon after going out of the hospital, Thain, in Sounds, openly accused manager Gerry Bron of having turned Uriah Heep into a mere “financial thing” and was fired two months after the group’s final gig of 1974 at New Theatre in Oxford, England on 14 December. A year later, on 8 December 1975, Gary Thain was found dead in his Norwood Green home, having overdosed on heroin.

8 more albums followed and some were Progressing and some not so much. By 1980 due to Managerial conspiracies and band member turnovers Galore, and Ken Hensley Quit. This Left Founding Guitarist  Mick Box with the Name of the band and contractual Obligations.

To their Credit be it musicians from King Crimson, The Spiders from Mars Bassist Trevor Bolder, others in and out of the band has stayed Consistently working throughout every High Point and Roadblock right to Present Day.The world additionally lost Lee Kerslake to cancer in the last year. The Band recently released their 50-year celebratory box set “Every Day Rocks”.

Ken Hensley

In the early 1990s, Our Local Music store somehow put together a daytime seminar with Autograph Guitarist Steve Lynch and Ken Hensley. Ken was working as a Rep for St. Louis Music and he was extremely Genuine and Humble.

I was a nobody at that time but after the sessions were done I approached him for advice on dealing with the industry and how I could gain contact that would matter.

This man was a Rock N Roll Legend, yet he said “Let’s go sit a while.”  The place cleared out and to my surprise, he and I had close to 90 mins of conversation to ourselves.

Before all was said and done he found a pen and gave me The Doors Ray Manzarek and Doors Rep Danny Sugarman’s home phone numbers, as well as His own.

He additionally reached in his briefcase and handed me a typed list of about 100 record-label A&R numbers as well.  I eventually tracked him down again through email years later and we had a few more talks. I have met and spent time with a few “Rock Stars” and been treated well, But Ken has a special place in my heart. He had zero reasons to do that.

He just was that sort of man. I do think he had the Biggest smile I’ve ever seen.  Funny side note..our Local Newspaper claimed this event being held was “Not Newsworthy”.

Regardless of who is or was in the band Uriah Heep’s music is a treasure and if you haven’t explored their work There’s much to be found in almost any album. I’m just a super enthusiast of the “Demons and Wizards/ Magician’s Birthday “ Period of their work. It’s a great starting point to move on from to anything before or after.

Uriah Heep What a Band. Hail Hail Rock N’ Roll!

From Roller Rinks to Rock Stars: Chet Croxton’s Lighting Legacy

Our basis for Guitardoor has been about the Guitar Player, yet sometimes you find a curve in the road and it’s a way to give credit to the people behind the Player.

The Crew of any band large enough to have one is the Machine that ensures you aren’t looking at a stage lit by candlelight. A good Lighting man and crew are as integral to the success of the show as the sound man and the Band themselves. They provided the WOW factor as technology progresses and even back in the day, you needed the atmosphere of the visual, and the people who work tirelessly are not spoken of nearly enough.

Chatting With Chet

I encountered Chet Croxton in a Guitar Group he was exiting, like myself has respect for the freedom of people to be who they are and there was some hate flying toward an older Gentleman who was just playing his guitar the way he played. He made his exit with words of critical wisdom. I decided to reach out and talk with him on the Guitar playing Level and found a whole other story.

At first, we were on the subject of Guitar addiction. At some point, I had decided I wanted to write about Alex Lifeson as RUSH was not only my first concert back in 1984 but the Band’s music has always been a massive part of my life. Chet as it turned out was not only a fan as well, He was on Tour a few times as Lighting Director and As RUSH freaks know, the crew are friends and extended family of the Band. This isn’t solely about one band, however, it’s the story of Many and a Fellow who made his way through numerous situations and there is no doubt many of you reading this have been at a show where part of the Magic of the night was in his vision and in his hands.

Chet’s Musical Career

Chet’s story into music entertainment began with those wonderful parental words “Get a Job!” and as a teenager talked his way into a gig being a DJ at a rollerskating rink. Not a bad gig for a young man. He at first thought he had found his profession yet, as often happens we learn there’s always something else around the corner.

By The Mid 80’s he had made many a friend and had been introduced to the rough and tumble music scene of the D.C. area and was called upon to not be a DJ but fill in for the light man on a gig a friends band “Tripping on Rats” was playing with a band called “OVERKILL”. Relying on Logic and Instinct of following the Drummer for his rhythmic foundation of this task he did so well his name carried around in the circles and he came into other opportunities.

He became acquainted with the owners of “Cellar Door Entertainment” who would later own “Ticketmaster” for a lengthy period of time. One thing led to another his work schedule and name grew. He was not only working with bands but was brought in to design, purchase the gear and assemble a system for a Large venue called “Nation” and all told given the sole responsibility of making decisions with a budget of 1.8 Million dollars. He began to Cross paths with the likes of L7 and a guy named Bob Rock and a hefty list of others. Reputation is the calling card and Chet’s Reputation in the work was ever-increasing.

RUSH

Chet Croxton was called in to replace a lighting member due to an unfortunate emergency For RUSH on the European Leg of the “Presto” Tour as well as some dates in Canada. He was carried over again to work With the Band on their “Roll the Bones” Tour of Europe and another go Round on the “Counterparts” Tour in Asia, Europe, The U.S., and Canada.

Rush on ABC (Japan) part 1

Rush on ABC (Japan) part 2

He fondly recalled not only the fun involved with all three members of RUSH but their kindness and concern to advise him on the Business. He recalled Geddy and Alex both sitting down and explaining he needed to know the ins and outs of the legal and financial aspects of a “Tech Rider” contract on Pay and even how to get your Laundry done contractually. Friends as much as employers, RUSH has always been a top-notch human being. In time Chet acquired the band’s very first Lighting Board used for many years. Trading work for this Rare piece of history. It is secured in an undisclosed location.

Not Long after the RUSH Tours, he was hired on to do a little thing you may have Heard of called “Lollapalooza” and worked that from 1991 to 1993.

Lollapalooza 1991 to 1996 – Short Documentary

One stand-out stint of work was With The Jerry Garcia Band. Chet ran Liquid light shows for the band and was a willing and ready Partner in Shenanigans with Mr. Jerry G.

He was hired to work his magic by the Legendary JAXX Nightclub in Springfield, Virginia from 1996 to 2000 and was Bestowed the name “ LIGHT GOD” by Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society.

The number of people Chet worked with within one situation or another is a staggering list.

Joan Jett, April Wine, It’s a Beautiful Day, The Dead Kennedy’s, GODHEAD, Robin Trower, Pat Travers, Alice In Chains, Todd Rundgren, David Allen Coe, Trent Reznor, Faster PussyCat, The Plasmatics, Dokken, Lynch Mob, Vince Neil, and more.

Many continue to be personal friends such as Joe Lynne Turner, Miles Kennedy, John Corabi and that list goes on as long as the Roads he’s traveled.

He has also been witness to the Sex Drugs and Rock N Roll life that holds many stories most of which cannot be mentioned here. One that brought me to Laughter was Mayhem Drummer “Hellhammer” challenging Chet and friends to a Drinking contest and later wondering exactly what happened the next morning.

Chapter 114 “Vanilla Ice”

Now Personally I’ve had some phone calls that were surprising but I doubt anyone can say this sort of call Happened to them other than  Chet. When The IceMan made his Metal record he began a tour and when he came through the area a friend called up Chet to get him to Ride Along. A Backstage discussion on Chet’s Tattoo work culminated by Bringing him home to do some Tattoo work On Rob. This began a great friendship to this day. A few years later  He was invited to another gig to dress like a maniac clown as part of the show.. (see excerpts from a forthcoming Documentary Chet is included below)

Chet Croxton is a self-described Guitar collector, he shuns saying, player. He is also one of the most straightforward and colorful characters I’ve had the pleasure to speak to, and I’m sure this is another friendship made. You can’t help but Like the man We share a love for Cliff Burton rest his soul and Our list of players we didn’t get to see and that sucks for us is pretty Short. Randy Rhoades

After Speaking of his entire amazing career Chet told me “with me, the most important thing I ever accomplished in the music business was giving the local acts a fair shake while the headliners felt insecure.  Making the local acts look like rock stars while their friends and parents videoed or watched was more important than any paycheck or road trip.. their gratitude and friendships were far more important to me..”

The words of a True good and ethical man.

So in closing remember when you go to a show, or take a stage to perform yourself be it a bar or the Megadome there are people to thank. The men who make it all happen whose names you don’t know. There’s nothing to hear without the sound Crew and the Magic of Production are your Lighting and effects experts. Without them, you are Standing in a Darkroom waiting on nothing. The Tail doesn’t wag the Dog.

Pioneers of Hardcore Punk:Bad Brains

Bad Brains is a hardcore punk band that was formed in Washington D.C. in 1977. The band’s original lineup consisted of vocalist H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson. They are known for their unique blend of punk rock, reggae, and metal, and are considered pioneers of the hardcore punk genre. Bad Brains’ self-titled debut album, released in 1982, is widely regarded as a classic of the genre. The band has undergone several lineup changes over the years, but they continue to tour and record new music to this day.

The Bad Brains are a study in True Freedom against all odds. Henry Rollins Said Brains’ lead vocalist H.R. Jumping on him from the stage and pinning him to the Floor while singing in his face was the actual moment he felt he was truly Born. They Mixed the most aggressive Hardcore and Punk Music with a later devotion to Rastafarian Beliefs and Dub Music and somehow balanced the two. They were Legendary before they recorded a note during the end of the ’70s and in 1983 were recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest band on planet Earth. Throughout it all, they carried a message of unity where many in that genre spewed Destruction and Nihilism.

Originating from the Washington D.C. area in 1977 Their classic lineup includes singer H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson. This lineup was intact until 1987 and has reunited periodically in the years since. An All Black Punk band as a concept in the public mind drew curiosity from people like Rollins and Ian MacKaye of Fugazi. It was quickly of no importance to their collective race, they were one of the most Influential Bands ever.

The band name was taken from Ramone’s song “Bad Brain” and they were inspired by many of the movements by the Ramones, The Damned, The Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, and others. They didn’t simply copy what they heard, they added to it and became equal contemporaries.

Their Positive message was a mission, but the intensity of the delivery caused the Rabid fan base to be so amped up and Tornado like that they quickly were as one of their songs proclaimed “Banned in D.C.” as Club owners didn’t want their venues literally torn apart. They relocated to New York City and joined in the scene at CBGB learning to live on $5.00 a day.. Which became a survival skill to buy $5 of weed and turn it into $15 selling single joints.

In August of 1977, the band had recorded a cassette of Music some would simply call demos That would make waves. The recordings later became the album “Black Dots”. By all accounts, this is a Monolith of inspired music.

The vocal parts were recorded outside of the makeshift home studio….in the bushes and Shrubs and crickets are on the recording announcing H.R. had invaded their territory. This recording would be given new life later. (see the band’s Webpage)

BAD BRAINS – BANNED IN DC – CBGB 1982 (OFFICIAL VERSION)

Their stint in New York was Promising but the hard living sent them home to D.C. for a time and were soon summoned by Successful Restaurateur Mo Sussman who even though he didn’t understand the full weight of Punk and Hardcore rock music did see something special in them. He had been asked to invest in a film that he conceptually found horrible.

However, in the film, there was footage of the Bad Brains playing Max’s Kansas City and he was awestruck.

He became their Manager and invested 25 thousand dollars in Bad Brains by buying them all new equipment and a Brand New Van, which in a short time was Stolen in its entirety within the first month of their return to New York.

Mo had the foresight to insure everything so they just repeated the shopping trip. . 1980 was also the time the Band saw Bob Marley perform and made the decision to Turn to Become Rastafarians.

Before the final move to New York, Sussman also secured them in a house in Rural Virginia where they could play all hours of the night and progress in their writing and becoming an even tighter machine.

The noise wasn’t the issue with enough distance from the Neighboring residents, it was the culture shock of a Group of Black men, Rastafarians at that, living in the vicinity of wealthy Whites that had to be addressed to some racial satisfaction.

They were raided on the assumption the equipment they had must be stolen and they had to have Massive amounts of Drugs.

The Police soon discovered neither was the case and Mo pushed the facts that the real truth was this was Racial profiling and shamed the police into not taking the band into Jail. Luckily they didn’t have their usual personal amount of weed on that particular Day as the members recall in Laughter the house was almost always a Fog of smoke.

When they returned from the Rural house to the Stage many old friends and fans were shocked that they now were mixing Reggae and Dub in the same set as their Hardcore music. More shocking was they were speaking with Jamaican accents. Some fans were lost, and More fans were Gained. Members of the band that would become “The Beastie Boys” stated it perfectly balanced out their live show as similar to a Race they could pace the energy between Frantic to mellow and kick the gears back into Hardcore again. All the while the PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) of their beginnings were now further amplified by the Rasta creed of oneness.

Bad Brains – I and I Rasta (live at CBGB 1982)

https://youtu.be/2pUlNfdnsAM

1981 a fellow named Jerry Williams saw Bad Brains perform and being a sound engineer would become an integral part of the band’s recordings. He set up a rehearsal space at 171 avenue A but was using it more as an underground venue for bands to play to a substantial audience.

He also had an elevated sound booth much like some indoor tree house and had an income recording bands live for $10 per hour. On May 2nd, 1981 Bad Brains played 171 A and Williams recorded the band’s show. Those recordings became the foundation of the Band’s First full release via the ROIR label.

In the fall of 1982 Ric Ocasek of “The Cars” came in contact with Bad Brains and invited them to play a few shows with his band and then offered Brains to make a record for their first time in a Professional Recording studio.

They were a bit standoffish at first but in the end, embraced the idea. The Band and Ric recorded this album in only 3 days. “Rock for Light” was the result and Nirvana / Foo Fighters Dave Grohl credits that album as a must-have for any self-respecting punk fan. He further Credits Brains Drummer Earl Hudson for inspiring his own drumming style.

1986 brought the Album “I Against I” on SST records. It was another expansion of their music. It incorporated their signature sound with new elements of Funk and Metal.

The entire records vocals were done in a matter of hours all the same day as Vocalist had announced he had to return to D.C. and serve 6 months in Jail over a past conviction for possession of a substantial amount of weed.

The record only lacked one vocal part and in time was literally “Phoned in” to the tape from the correctional facility.

Bad Brains I Against I (live Florida 1987)

Bad Brains membership fractured in 1987 with the band on tour supporting “I Against I”. H.R. and the Hudson brothers wanted to focus more on Reggae and left the tour. The next album “Quickness” was started with other people and then H.R. would return and replace vocals. When the next tour was in swing H.R.’s behavior of not showing up to shows or meetings became a habit and His involvement with the band essentially ended for a long time. He became even more eccentric, loved by many, and confused by more.

Five more albums were recorded in various states of Membership. The changes were many and enough to confound anyone. The Original band was scattered for months to years. H.R. had quit the band 3 times by 1989, that 3rd departure was only one month into a tour,

March 1994 brought a call from Beastie Boy Adam Yauch waving the flag of reunion as the word was a Rep for Madonna’s Label Maverick wanted the Band with H.R. The signing was a Flurry of money and contracts ultimately spawning the album “God of Love”. Maverick executives were not aware of the extent of singer H.R.’s quirks and tendencies and they were placed on a Major Tour per request of The Beastie Boys.. On the Opening night of the tour, H.R. refused to leave the bus ranting about improper behavior from the Authorities and Generals and not being addressed in the right way by what were essentially invisible people. As the tour manager is trying to escort him off the bus to the stage H.R. physically attacked everyone on the bus and was arrested. He was banned from Toronto more so because of yet another Marijuana charge than the assault.

2006/2007 a reunion Tour was rolling along with Great shows and not-so-great shows. Bad Brains were asked to play CBGB for the last 3 nights of its closing party and The institution of Rock Music History meant as much to Bad Brains as any of the bands who were a part of its legacy.

H.R. arrived onstage on night one wearing a motorcycle helmet he had fitted with a microphone inside and refused to take it off although it was causing Feedback and chaos on stage.

He followed up in Chicago by sitting on the drum Riser and smiling, standing at the mic motionless still smiling like the Cheshire Cat, but NOT performing and seemingly mocking the crowd.

In 2012 Bad Brains released their 9th album “Into The Future”. Plans for the future are uncertain, as it has been. The Band members have come to terms with their vocalist’s situation and recognized that the original lineup is the larger entity that works and what the majority of the fans want.

Bad Brains have been an influence on generations of bands and in 2021 they are still spoken of in reverence. Their following is growing and their legendary tales are being told, good or bad via books and documentaries. The Back catalog is gradually coming out in style with a rerelease of 1989’s “Quickness” slated for Feb 2022. This Band Mattered from day one in the culture and history of music and as long as the world continues they will be Important. The only thing today that can be said beyond that is the tradition of any great cliffhanger. “To Be Continued…..”

Kieran Mc Crory “Crow’s Blues”

I’m surprised by the Inspiration one can receive from the Internet. It’s made the world a smaller and more connected creature of life. That can be a positive or a negative depending on who you are dealing with. Somewhere around 2013 if I’m not mistaken, I had a blessing I was introduced to Crow’s Blues.

I made one of the rarest of things, a TRUE friend.

Music brought Kieran and me together. I was watching him sitting in his kitchen in Omagh, Ireland playing a Hank William’s song on his acoustic. He had such a passionate and authentic delivery that I was truly intrigued. We have never gone much more than a few weeks talking since then.

First it was about musical interests, of which we had many similarities . We discussed my Dystonia and he had a real interest, a genuine concern. Then we were talking about some issues with his health that in time became very serious. He never has lacked a firm Grip on the value of life and the Crow’s blues he plays sometimes shows his musical talent.

Somewhere in the earliest times, I asked him if he wrote his own music and he sent me a song. I’m sharing that song with you today. He would in his humble way say he wasn’t that special. This would be wrong.

ROCK N ROLL BY kmc 2012 Crow’s Blues Style

I was asked by him later if I would have a go at his music myself and I did. The end result was….His version was better, no matter what I did with it. He would probably argue the position, but we two mules are hard to move when we feel strongly on something.

During the years of our friendship he bought every single album or EP I released. I did sell recordings to many places on the globe and the list of countries I didn’t sell something in is a short list. Yet NO ONE bought them all. He has consistently supported my work, and in all truth when Regalia Records was no more and I finally found a new way to distribute  my songs I didn’t have them in digital form required at that moment. Kieran sent me all of my own music to help me rebuild.

We are both afflicted with issues that robbed our personal abilities, but that’s not the worst thing in the world because it just make the bond of friendship stronger.

He had to find new outlets for his creative side through art and my affinity for that side is equal to my affinity to the music he created. So I am here to just say thank you there Crow.

JUST BREATHE INSTRUMENTAL 2021 BY CROW.

Your friendship is of great value. Your authenticity and soul I found in your music carries over to your strength as a Human and YOU are a Warrior. As you would always say “One Love”.

Mojo Preachers Cherish Ever After

Welcome Trevor, I see all members of the Mojo preachers have a great little bio on your website can you tell us more about the band?.

A: The Bios are OK but I can expand in areas that are not mentioned on the site. Some of the named bands in the bio have rather incestuous links and morphed gestations. Some of the folks are probably known to you . . . might not be worth mentioning. This is a small world.

How did you all get together as a group to form the Mojo Preachers?

A: The MoJo’s first got together about 7/8 odd years ago with Sophie, Andy, and Carleton, as original members. I actually became aware of the band when I reviewed their debut album ‘Confessions’ back in 2016. I’ve been writing for a well-known monthly UK Blues music mag for many years now as well as playing bass.

Prior to this, guitarist Andy Walker and I met up when we were asked to join Malaya Blue’s Band for eight short months in 2015. We were both invited and asked to move on at the same time and since then have been inseparable. After this, I was invited to join the MoJo’s back in May 2018, with Andy now back in the fold, when the band was looking to replace their current rhythm section. New drummer Matt Furness came on board shortly after I joined after he was recommended by another local, Norwich UK, session musician.

Since then, the lineup has cemented, with the band releasing ‘Man-Made Monster’ in 2019. This album reached number 2 in the IBBA’s top 40 charts for July that year and reached number 15 as the most played album for all of 2019. It also garnered 7/10 in Classic Rock Magazines Blues review.

The Mojo Preachers albums past and present

The debut album ‘Confessions’ started life more as an extension of the band’s hard work on the blues circuit, but since 2018 the material and direction have lent more to the symphonic and progressive genre and aspect, but still with the elements of its bluesy roots, all touched with a hue of Rock; with the bigger and better venues opening their doors. Both Carleton (Keys) and I (bass) are great exponents and have a passion for good old Prog Rock.

The album ‘Man Made Monster’ is evident of this genre, with the new material, being written for the follow-up, leaning further. Often this band has been cited as hard to pigeonhole, such are the influences of each musician. The MoJo’s support the Legendary Prog band ‘Focus’ on their only London, UK date of their 50th Anniversary tour, probably now 51, or 52, after Covid has taken its toll. Over the last few years, appearances have come far and wide throughout the UK for this East of England-based band, headlining at London’s legendary 100 Club at the second time of asking.

Both Andy and Carleton are the main writers, with lyrics and subject matter coming from Sophie. Each band member has their own home studio with the ability to arrange, revise and substitute at will, often driving a song into uncharted territory as it develops with the addition of each part. However, apart from the strong catalog of self-penned material the band does include the odd ‘cover’, given the MoJo Brush Up.

Change Everything a track written during lockdown?

Mojo Preachers Lockdown ‘Change Everything’

The track ‘Change Everything’. These are the liner notes for this track which give a good explanation. This track and this version only appear on my 50-year legacy album ‘Cherish Ever’ which was released earlier in 2021.

‘Change Everything’ started life out as ‘Cave and a King’. Cave/King was released on the Mojo Preachers 2019 album ‘Man Made Monster’. In 2020 the world fell foul of a deadly virus (COVID-19) and in March the term ‘LockDown’ became widely used. During the inactive months that followed, of canceled gigs, no live music, etc, the world/UK turned to other musical means and outlets. This song was just an example. The lyrics were revised by Sophie and the whole instrumentation was solitarily re-recorded. This version is like an old-style ‘Re-Mix’ but under LockDown constraints.

Video JESUS SANDALS by The Mojo Preachers.

‘Jesus Sandals’ is something very brand new.

“Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived. – Dalai Lama.”

Mojo Preachers Performing “White Rabbit”

White Rabbit’ (a Grace Slick song) is a complete ‘out-of-the-blue one rehearsal take that was polished up rather nicely.

Here are the liner notes about ‘White Rabbit’ on my Legacy album ‘Cherish Ever’ released in Feb 2021.

The Mojo’s had talked about doing this song ever since the day I was asked to join the band back in May 2018. This version was recorded at a full band rehearsal studio session, in one take, with no overdubs. This particular day was the first time the band had played this song all together. There was one unrecorded run-through, an aborted first take, then this. The mojos doubled up on the original song structure and introduced a Jefferson Airplane-influenced guitar solo, sandwiched in between.

It could be classed as a ‘Warts n’ All’ performance, but this captures, succinctly, the very essence of the band, the song, and the day and is the sole reason for inclusion. A prime example of the ‘Performance-Spark’, the ‘Crackle’, that we all strive for each time we play. Even on this recording, there’s evidence of the band hunting for a new and unique groove, looking for that elusive ‘let’s make it different. There was no initial intention to use this take, but overall, it turned out better than expected. Even rehearsals can yield something special, this certainly has it, and the lesson here was to keep the “Tape Rolling . . . “

As with ‘Change Everything’, ‘White Rabbit’ was remotely mixed and produced by Andy Walker and supplied to Rooks Yard Studios as a complete, mixed track.

So Any Plans for Upcoming Gigs/Events or New Material Soon from Yourself or the Mojo Preachers?

As we come to the end of the year we mop up the Covid postponed gigs. As mentioned earlier, the support to legendary prog-rockers Focus is just one, as part of their 50th anniversary Tour, on 30th November at London’s Under The Bridge venue. This just so happens to be part of the stadium complex of Chelsea Football (soccer) Club and for those in the UK, I have tickets, and I thank you.

As for 2022, currently being scheduled, along with a new album release, the follow-up to ‘Man-Made Monster’.

Personally speaking, very much doubt I’ll do a ‘Cherish Ever ’ Volume 2, it’s a hard album to follow, and rather leave it as the special, and limited edition, it was. With all the hard copies disappearing, 24th October 2021 heralds the release of the digital version; suggesting you all keep an eye out for the platform that this will appear on.

Thanks to everyone for your support, love, and kindness. For further information on the Mojo Preachers, please pop along to our website:

Born Healer:keeping soul music alive

Born Healer “Preaching Soul”

The Band “Born Healer” is a ray of light and hope. They are keeping classic rock and soul alive and fresh without being a retro act. This is new, valid, and spans a wide range of styles that carries something for every listener. As long as you listen to great music like the music of born healer.

Vocalist Helen Turner has her own voice, she has her own style of delivery I’ve not heard before and in an age when Nothing is new under the Sun….She has defied that by bringing “New” to the table in a variety of ways. Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland she is very much at ease fronting this great band and owns the stage she’s on no matter when or where.

Guitarist Ian Black is another who copies no one and is highly adept at painting many a sonic picture. His versatility is boundless and his playing can be as Hot as any and subtle in the perfect places. The maturity of this band as a unit implies they know the unwritten rule to “Serve the Song”.

Bassist Marek Funkas is one of the founders of this band, now laying down the bottom end since 2015, and has a very focused approach to his art. He is unshakeable. Godzilla could be coming at him on Fire Like Arthur Brown Juggling Chainsaws and he would not stray from his spot nor drop one second of steady groove.

On the Drum throne, you find Steve Weaver. Steve comes in after original drummer Andy Jones. The band is Respectably Family in that they purposely want both men recognized as integral to the Groove. Both Steve and Andy can Groove with the very best.

With Songs like “Heavy Rumble,” you find not only a great song but also a wonderful delivery. Ian Black’s guitar tone is something he has honed to perfection. It is (even in my own playing) sometimes easy to forget Clarity. Be it a Rhythm, or simple chord every note is clean and well pronounced. He treats every aspect of his work as important to the sound of the band. This band is all Team players.

Heavy Rumble Born Healer

“Pressure Valve” Kicking its Funky drums and perfect guitar grit is accentuated in Harmony vocals and Helen’s Voice is Preaching Soul. Again.Hey…Godzilla’s still coming and Bassman Marek isn’t moving an inch.  It’s one of the best-crafted songs I’ve heard in a while.

BORN HEALER “PRESSURE VALVE” – FROM NEW ALBUM ” ‘TIL THE DAWN “

Being a Guitar Based entity I wanted to get down to Ian’s Tools of Tone.  “My main guitar, which I use almost exclusively, is a Gibson 1989 Les Paul Standard (cherry sunburst). My primary amp is a hand-wired clone of a Marshall JTM45 built from a Ceriatone kit by Martin Whelan of Martamp/MJW amps and modded to include London Power Scaling.  I use it with an MJW 2×12 cab fitted with two Scumback J75 12″ speakers.”

“ On my pedalboard, I have a Robert Keeley-modded Ibanez TS808 Tubescreamer, which I have on all the time; I vary the level of drive to get my clean and crunch sounds.  Aside from some studio reverb, this rig is what I used to record all guitar parts on our forthcoming album, which should be out in a couple of months.”

“ For gigs, I use an original Zendrive for most solos, and I have an MXR Carbon Copy delay on a very short delay all the time, which I compliment with a Boss DSD-3 Delay on a longer delay and/or a Boss CH1 Chorus.  I also use a Boss TU2 Tuner and a few looper switches from UK independent Vein Tap.”

Born Healer has also been a Live band whose past years Gig List shows dedication and Professional Ethics. You can take a look for yourself at their web page http://www.bornhealer.com/

This Band is a direct retraction to the detractors who say “Rock is Dead”. They are Solid, Jamming, Determined, and just plain Awesome. They will Hopefully someday come over here to The States and Shake some Stages. Failing that If you are from here and plan to fly across the Pond, try and plan around a Born Healer Show. I think you will be Grinning from ear to Ear That you did.

AC/DC Most Overlooked and Underrated Albums To Rock With

“Flick of The Switch” is one of my two most overlooked and underrated AC/DC albums that I proudly include in my Favorites from the entire catalog. This album captures the essence of high-octane rock and roll, feeling like a muscle car roaring down a back road at 100 mph. The first time I experienced it, I was struck by its raw energy and powerful riffs, which perfectly accompany moments of adrenaline and freedom. A huge shoutout to my New Albany, Ohio Lunatic Mentors, who played a significant role in shaping my appreciation for this phenomenal band.

Right from the opening track, “Rising Power,” the album delivers a potent blend of electrifying guitar work and driving rhythms that embody the very spirit of rock music. The guitar playing on this record is particularly noteworthy; it’s gritty and aggressive, with Angus Young’s unmistakable solos slicing through the mix like a hot knife through butter. The thunderous riffs and powerful chords create an atmosphere that is both exhilarating and rebellious, making it clear that this album is meant to be played loud.

Tracks like “This House is on Fire” and “Nervous Shakedown” are simply hell-raising anthems, perfectly encapsulating the quintessential themes of beer drinking and breaking the law. Each song pulsates with a sense of urgency, and the lyrics resonate with a wild spirit that is hard to resist. The guitar work, in particular, drives these tracks forward, propelling them into the realm of unforgettable rock classics.

“Flick of The Switch” is not just an album; it’s an experience that resonates with anyone who appreciates the raw power of rock music. From its hard-hitting tracks to its exceptional guitar playing, this record truly goes to 11, reminding us why AC/DC remains one of the most iconic bands in rock history. Whether you’re cranked up in your car or jamming out at home, this album is a perfect soundtrack for those unforgettable, wild moments that make life exhilarating.

“If You Want Blood” is undoubtedly one of Bon Scott’s finest hours and collectively stands as one of the best live albums you will ever hear. Recorded at the iconic Apollo Theater in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1978, this album captures an unrelenting jam from AC/DC at the very peak of their powers. From the moment you press play, you’re thrust into an electrifying atmosphere that showcases the band’s incredible energy and musical prowess.

The album opens with the powerful track “Riff Raff,” which sets the tone for an exhilarating ride through classic rock. The rawness of Bon Scott’s voice combined with the band’s fiery guitar riffs showcases the extraordinary talent of lead guitarist Angus Young, whose iconic playing elevates each song. His driving riffs and explosive solos reverberate throughout the record, creating a visceral experience that is hard to match. As the album progresses, you can feel the connection between the band and the audience, reinforcing AC/DC’s reputation as one of the greatest rock bands ever.

As you move through tracks like “High Voltage” and “Whole Lotta Rosie,” the album demonstrates not just the power of their anthemic songs but also the incredible musicianship that supports them. The guitar work is nothing short of legendary, with Angus’s signature sound cutting through every song like a beacon of rock n’ roll brilliance. You can hear the passion and energy in his playing, making it easy to visualize the exhilarating live experience that fans were treated to that night.

The album comes to a thrilling conclusion with “Rocker,” leaving listeners wanting more and fully engaged with the explosive energy that only a live performance can deliver. It’s not only about the music, though; “If You Want Blood” is also in the running for the coolest album cover ever, perfectly encapsulating the rebellious spirit of the band and the explosive nature of their music.

In essence, “If You Want Blood” is more than just a live album; it’s a powerful document of AC/DC in their element, delivering the raw, unfiltered energy of rock music at its finest. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the band, this album is an essential listen that showcases the thrilling guitar work and unforgettable charisma that has solidified AC/DC’s place in rock history.

“Powerage,” a cornerstone in AC/DC’s discography, not only served as the catalyst for the live recording you mentioned but also stands as a testament to the band’s raw energy and musical prowess. Even if the album contained nothing but the electrifying rocker “Sin City,” it would undoubtedly be a prized possession for any fan. However, the true value of “Powerage” lies in its abundance of killer tracks.

The scorching intensity of “Down Payment Blues” and “Rock N Roll Damnation” solidifies the album’s place among AC/DC’s underrated classics. These songs showcase the band’s signature blend of blues-infused rock and relentless rhythm, leaving a lasting impression on listeners.
