Hailing from Birmingham and the West Midlands, UK, a new force in hard rock has emerged: The Davidson Trio. This classic power trio formation is turning heads with their potent blend of rock, blues, and funk, showcased on their debut recording, ‘Cougar’.
The band is fronted by the formidable Owen Davidson, who handles both bass duties and lead vocals, boasting an impressive five-octave range. Davidson is no stranger to the rock scene, having previously performed with notable names like Uli Jon Roth and the band Rumour.
On guitar is Ben Bicknell. Bicknell and Davidson share a musical history, having previously played together in the Glenn Hughes tribute act, Black Country Community. Their established chemistry provides a solid foundation for the Trio’s sound.
Rounding out the lineup is drummer Ellis Brown, described as an exciting new discovery who provides the powerful engine room for the band’s hard-rocking sound.
Their debut album, ‘Cougar’, promises an “old school album given a contemporary makeover.” Listeners can expect cracking songs driven by seamless interplay between the musicians, punctuated by bursting solos and anchored by Davidson’s soulful vocal delivery. The album is positioned as a return to the roots of rock-blues and funk, aiming to capture the raw energy that made the power trio format so compelling in the first place.

Owen Davidson explains the band’s genesis and the album’s direction: “This album is a return to my rock-blues and funk roots. I was always into guitarists like Jeff Beck, while in my early career I supported Trapeze, and I always liked the idea of a power trio.”
He also cites significant bass influences like Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, and, naturally, Glenn Hughes. “So having met Ben and Ellis,” Davidson continues, “I wanted to write the best possible songs in a power trio format. I’d like to think that with this album we have achieved that.”
Early descriptions praise ‘Cougar’ as a “powerhouse rock blues album” filled with “sharp riffs, booming solos, and catchy hooks,” effectively restating the core appeal of the genre.
