Richard Thompson: Legendary Folk-Rock Guitarist & Songwriter

Richard Thompson is a British folk-rock musician, widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. His music career spans over five decades, marked by exceptional songwriting, masterful guitar playing, and a distinctive voice.

Early Career and Fairport Convention (1967-1971)

Thompson’s musical journey began in the late 1960s when he joined the legendary folk-rock band Fairport Convention. During his tenure with the band, he played a pivotal role in shaping their sound, infusing it with elements of electric guitar and American roots music. This period saw the band produce some of their most acclaimed albums, including “Liege & Lief” and “Full House,” solidifying their place in British music history including being named the greatest folk album of alt-time by BBC radio 2 folk awards in 2006

Richard & Linda Thompson (1974-1982)

Following his departure from Fairport Convention, Thompson embarked on a successful partnership with his then-wife, Linda Thompson. Together, they formed a formidable duo, Richard & Linda Thompson, renowned for their intricate harmonies, introspective lyrics, and innovative guitar work.

Their albums, like “I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight” and “Shoot Out the Lights,” garnered critical acclaim and established them as a leading force in folk-rock.

The Albion Band and Solo Career

Furthermore to his collaborations, Thompson has also pursued a prolific solo career. He has released many critically acclaimed albums, showcasing his versatility as a songwriter and musician. He has also been a part of The Albion Band, a British folk music supergroup.
